Twenty-Two

Lucia wedged herself between them. “No, Leo!”

Leo ignored her, grabbing the front of Armando’s shirt. “I told you to leave my sister alone.”

Armando shrugged out of his grip. “Why don’t you let her make the decision for herself?”

“In this case, she cannot decide for herself. Getting her involved in the royal family—through you—would have lasting consequences, and I cannot allow it.”

Armando turned to Lucia. “What do you say, Lucia? Can we be friends?”

Friends turn to lovers. Lovers turn to spouses. She’d never thought beyond this. Leo would get mad if she sided with Armando. Let Armando think she didn’t want his friendship. Then maybe Leo would not fuss about every look or word they exchanged.

“No,” she lied.

That little word let out the wind from his sails. His expression slackened as he took a few steps backward. She wanted to call after him, but she knew the only way Leo would leave him alone was if he no longer considered him a threat to Lucia’s loyalty.

Armando blinked and nodded. “Goodnight, then.” He swiveled at his heels and disappeared into the night.

Lucia winced. “One of these days, you will do something to that prince that will land you in jail.”

“I don’t care. It’ll be so satisfying.”

Lucia’s eyes narrowed. “Seriously, Leo. You need to think of someone besides yourself. If you end up doing something to sully our family’s name, the burden is not just on you. Have you seen Mama lately?”

“Yes, why?”

“Have you really looked at her? She seems to have the world on her shoulders. She’s getting older, Leo. All these years of hard work are finally taking their toll on her. You need to be lifting her burden, not adding to it.”

“I am pushing for changes in the wild horse program for that very reason, Lucia.” Leo leaned forward. “When the royal family stops dictating their agenda on the land and horses, then I will be able to breathe easy. No more looking over our shoulder fearfully every year, hoping they won’t use eminent domain and take the horses. So yes, it’s for our family’s future.”

“Have you considered compromising? That’s an option too, you know.”

Leo’s expression turned to flint. “There will be no compromise.”

“You’re sealing off any hope for peace!”

Leo walked to the tent entrance and turned. “Then so be it.”
